What wine should you drink with your Christmas dinner?

Whether you cook a huge turkey, a joint of ham or a roasted goose, you still need to know what wine you should drink with your Christmas dinner.

There are so many options that sometimes choosing wines for your Christmas dinner can be a little overwhelming, so thankfully our expert wine advisors have offered some assistance.

The options don’t stop at the main course though, you’ll need something to make your Buck’s Fizz for brunch, a light white to enjoy alongside your starter, a sweet treat to serve with dessert and a delicious, rich Port for the cheese. All that’s before we’ve even mentioned Champagne to toast the Queen’s speech to!

But don’t panic, help is at hand so you can choose your perfect festive food matches.

What to drink on Christmas Day

We’ve covered all the bases in our guide to festive food pairings.

Starting the day with a Buck’s Fizz is a Christmas tradition that shouldn’t ever go out of fashion. We recommend Campanula Sparkling Pinot Grigio which is nice enough for a special occasion but not so fancy that you’ll be loath to mix it with orange juice!

If you’re spending all morning in the kitchen chances are you’ll need a little something to calm your nerves! For this we recommend Mil Pesetas Cream Sherry from iconic Spanish winery Barbadillo.

If you’re starting your meal with a smoked salmon starter the perfect accompaniment has to be La Damnée des Prieur. This Sancerre has a striking freshness that will really cut through that oily fish.

Next up is the turkey, and for this you need a really special wine. We’ve gone with Nelson Bay Pinot Noir, an affordable New Zealand take on this Burgundy classic that’s filled with notes of cranberry and smoky spice.

Now for dessert, Christmas pudding to be precise! We’ll be pairing ours with the delicious Midnight Frost Vidal Icewine which is a must-try for lovers of sticky-sweet dessert wines.

By the time 3pm rolls around you might be ready for a nap but steady on, all rise please for the Queen’s speech. To toast this annual tradition we’ve selected a bubbly fit for royalty. Her Majesty herself popped open a bottle of Sussex’s South Ridge Cuvée Merret Brut on her birthday!

The day is almost over, you’re about fit to burst but how can you resist all that gooey, smelly cheese? Andresen’s Late Bottled Vintage Port is devilishly good and perfect for drinking at the end of the night.
