Scotch Malt Whisky – Story 2

Still in Scotland, and remembering… Thirty or so years ago I discovered through someone at our local rugby club that now it was possible to buy individual casks from many brokers.

The whisky business must’ve been having a hard time because they were happy to sell any cask no matter how old and all for about the same price. We bottled individual malts from the ‘60’s and ‘70’s under our ‘First Cask’ label. We sold them for about £20 a bottle. Just try Googling ‘First Cask’ now, and see the prices some of our old bottles re-sell for now! Alas, not from us! I have about three bottles left, all opened and mostly drunk! About 14 years ago we made the catastrophic decision to sell off all our casks in bulk, at cost.

Ah well! Again.

Today Will and I went to the brand new Johnny Walker Experience on Princes Street which is totally the opposite of the dark old secret distillery days I knew. Bright open a theatrical/cinematic/musical show by lovely young people … with a dram or two too! Err… and whiskies going up to £27,000 a bottle! Baccarat bottle of course.

Very, very different!
