Marry chocolate and wine this Valentine’s Day, with a little help from Laithwaite’s

It is perhaps peculiar that, on the most romantic day of the year, a match typically made far from heaven is gifted. We are of course alluding to the age-old wine and chocolate combo.

Questionable couplings of these two headstrong characters can leave a bad taste in the mouth, and some believe that they simply are not right for each other. Here at Laithwaite’s, however, we struggle to accept that the two flavour powerhouses should go their separate ways. Surely a union of two such intense pleasures can be something quite magical?

Chocolate

Our experts got their thinking caps on and, without overstating things, we think these pairings might just change the world, forever.

Milk Chocolate

Mystery and allure surround the minimal labelling of Australian “cleanskins”. Do away with gimmicks, and prove that it really is all about what’s on the inside.

A truly hedonistic combination, the cassis and dark plum flavours of Cleanskin Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon with the smooth creaminess of milk chocolate is a real treat. The seductive red balances elegant blackcurrant aromas with smoky spice, already offering hints of chocolate and mint. It begs to blend with something sweet and silky, and participate in an intoxicating seduction of the senses.

Dark Chocolate

Velvety black fruit flavours powerful enough to stand up to bitter, intense chocolate can be found in The Boxer Durif from Westend Estate. This award-winning velvety red with its dark berry and spicy oak aroma is an ideal match for fragrant, deep cocoa flavours.

Complex, subtle hints of cinnamon and orange can be enjoyed with this pairing, as you sink into a truly indulgent sensory experience.

Perfect with creamy white meat dishes, the fresh and exotic Bergsig Gewurztraminer is also a natural partner for white chocolate. Its lingering finish blends quite beautifully with the luscious taste of chocolate’s sweetest guise.

With peach, apricot and a hint of rose petal, this pale gold treasure has been dubbed by our Buyer, Davy Zyw, as simply “tip top”! Medium-bodied and dry, the South African stunner has heady scents that stack up against the saccharine sweetness of white chocolate, to guarantee a truly delightful pairing to round off any Valentine’s meal.
